First a little about me, I'm the oldest of three children. I have a brother and a sister, both of who live in Adelaide with their wife and husband respectively. My brother and sister-in-law have a beautiful daughter who's name is Abigail. My father and mother live in Port Pirie, South Australia, dad's the UCA minister there and mum's a SSO in one of the local schools.
I moved to Canberra on the 31st of Jan 04 and am gradually settling into the area and meeting new people. I felt called to this position after a few chance meetings with some members of the Presbytery and Synod. Moving across to the eastern states was never really on my mind until July/August 2003... It's strange how God's inspiration can smack us over the back of the head when we're least expecting it.
I've lived and worked in SA for my entire life, my experience in ministry revolves around a large range of positions with the UCA, as a high school chaplain and also working for the Salisbury City Council as a Youth Activities Coordinator. I started working for the UCA while I studied Theology at Flinders University, to help support my part time work and study I also worked in the retail industry in many positions, primarily working for BP working 12am – 7am shifts.
I have an addiction... They say the first step is admitting it, however I'm not sure if i want to be cured from this particular addiction. The addiction is that I love listening to music, as such I have a fairly impressive cd collection, my favorite artists include U2, Radiohead, Counting Crows, Faithless, Ani Difranco, Deepchild and Paul Kelly. I love going to pubs and listening to the local live music scene, its inspiring how people use their god given talents to produce some fantastic music and poetry. My favorite song at the moment is by The Cat Empire titled “The Crowd.”
I also drink too much Coke... this is an addiction I (might) need to be cured of in the future...
My favorite quote is from Helmut Theilike “The Gospel must be constantly forwarded to a new address, because the recipient is repeatedly changing place of residence.” The words have been ones that have inspired a few of us around Adelaide to try to do church differently. For the last 8 or more years Ive been a part of the TOLLS community in Adelaide, what was an alternative worshiping community of people trying to explore what it means to be Christian in today's world.
The last place I lived in was a community house in Adelaide that offered hospitality to Refugees for 3 months while they settled in and learn their way around Adelaide, got jobs and started to study. While I was packing to leave for Canberra the house decided to offer an Asylum Seeker from Iraq a place to stay for as long as is necessary. The house is a way for a lot of us to explore our faith in a different context, to step out of the comfort zone and as such it was a fantastic experience.
Being from SA I have to confess that I have not followed Union or League much at all and am a supporter of the Adelaide Crows. I say this with great trepidation, already I have people telling me that I have to go and see the Brumbies soon.
I have moved into a unit in Queanbeyan and have called that UCA my home community, however I have been traveling around the Canberra Region and worshiped with a number of communities thus far and hope to get around a lot more.
I love the Simpsons and other “Escape” tv programs like Buffy, Angel and Alias. A list of my favorite movies would include “The Blues Brothers,” “Spiderman,” “Romero” and “The Matrix.” My favorite Food is Lasagna.
My most memorable moment would possibly be the first time I saw my niece almost a year ago now. Even today I am surprised that something that beautiful could come from someone related to me...
